Passing of Ballou '81 Alumni, Clarence Irby

Per our fellow class reunion committee member, Mildred "Yvette" Browne, "It is with a heavy heart that I have to deliver the news of one of my oldest childhood friends passing. Clarence Irby, Ballou Class of '81 passed on Monday November 21, 2016.You may already be informed. I just found out today. As many of you are aware Clarence could not make (our 35th class) reunion because he had just buried his only brother the day of the reunion."
Funeral services are as follows:
DATE: THURSDAY DECEMBER 1, 2016
PLACE: CAMP SPRINGS COMMUNITY BAPTIST CHURCH - 8040 WOODYARD ROAD, CLINTON, MD.
VISITATION @ 10AM UNTIL TIME OF SERVICE AT 11AM

****ATTENTION ALL BALLOU KNIGHTS!***

The Ballou Class of '81 35th Class Reunion Committee would like to send a special "Thank you" to each and every person that took the time to attend our 35th high school reunion at the new Ballou High School! Simply stated, WE HAD A BALL!

For everyone entering the new school for the first time, emotions ran high, some tears fell, and we all smiled with joy!

Everyone enjoyed socializing, the tour of the school, reception hour, dancing to Olde school music, our very own go-go songs, dinner buffet, dancing down the "Soul Train" line, the dessert/candy tables, the memorabilia table, and seeing how our teachers still got it! Ms. Colleen Dykema stayed on the dance floor!

We were TRULY blessed to see 9 Ballou Classes as well as several teachers, friends, and family members attend such a tremendous event! We had a combined 150+ guests attend and again, thank you for your presence!

Words cannot express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for making this reunion our very best!

Thus far, as you can see from the many pictures, again, WE HAD A BALL!

The FWBHS Class of '81 35th Reunion committee is hosting our 2nd fundraiser - Delaware Park Casino Trip on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Bus to depart at 10am and return at 7pm to Oxon Hill Park & Ride (near Tanger Outlets). Cost is $50 per person due by April 23, 2016. $30 rebate from the Casino. All payments are to be made via cash or checks. Checks payable to Wayne Johnson c/o F.W Ballou to P.O. Box 2061 Clinton, Maryland 20735. For tickets, contact one of the following committee members: Mildred Browne, Wayne & Yuneek Johnson, Freda Duncan, Vanessa Perry-Thomas, Edith Thrash-Edmonds, Phyllis Carr, or Gilbert Davidson. RE: Renaming Frank W. Ballou High School

Dear Chairman Mendelson:

Warm greetings to you from the Frank W. Ballou Senior High School Alumni Association ("BAA") Board of Directors; we are contacting you in reference to the recommendation that was presented to you that Frank W. Ballou High School be renamed to honor the former Mayor, Marian S. Barry. No one contacted the BAA regarding this issue; therefore, we were unaware that renaming of our Alma Mater was even an option for consideration.
We have the utmost respect for former Mayor, Marion Barry, and all of his contributions to support the city as Mayor, and then to the Ward 8 community as Councilmember; however, we DO NOT agree with renaming Frank W. Ballou Senior High School. The school has a long, positive, and rich history with over 21,000 proud Alumni that continue to hold strong bonds and memories to Ballou.
As the District's longest serving Mayor, we agree that Mr. Barry should be honored for his service. While he was Mayor, he worked tirelessly for the citizens of the District and his memorial should be reflective of his service and should be a focal point in the city, not just in Ward 8; not by disrupting the student's and alumni's connection to Frank W. Ballou Senior High School, our Alma Mater where education has excelled, friendships have thrived, dreams and relationships developed that continue to flourish 50 years later. We respectfully ask that you leave the legacy of the school intact and NOT rename Ballou, but as an alternative option, honor Mr. Barry in Ward 8 by naming an entity in Ballou, such as, the new media center, theater or the football stadium at Ballou High School after him, in addition to other memorials located elsewhere in the city.
